Head, Neck and Facial Wounds

HEAD, NECK AND FACIAL WOUNDS
DISCHARGE ADVICE

INTRODUCTION

These guidelines have been written to help you care for your wound when at home if there are stitches in the head, neck or on the face.

Would And Stitch Care

  • Wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
  • Avoid touching the wound unnecessarily as this can cause infection.
  • 24 hours after your operation, you can get the wound wet with warm water, although it is advisable not to saturate the wound. Allow to dry naturally or if excessively wet, then gently dab it dry with a clean towel.
  • Apply Chloramphenicol Eye Ointment to your stitches twice a day to prevent a crust or scab forming on the skin. Continue to apply the ointment until the stitches have been removed.
  • You may have been given a course of antibiotics, ensure that they are taken as instructed and complete the course.

Pain

  • If you are in pain, the most suitable painkiller is Paracetamol – 1-2 tablets taken up to 4 times a day.

  • If the pain becomes excessive or if there is increased swelling, redness or a discharge from the wound and you feel generally unwell or have a temperature, you should contact the hospital or your General Practitioner for advice.

  • If you experience any problems not included in this leaflet or would like further clarification, please do not hesitate to contact one of the nursing staff.
